For Immediate Release – April 25, 2013
Edmonton, AB – Edmonton’s internationally acclaimed Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company is returning to Ukraine for a unique 18-day tour of the cities of Kyiv, L’viv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi and Obuhiv.
For the first time, a Canadian Ukrainian dance ensemble will join forces with professional ensembles in Ukraine to create collaborative Ukrainian dance performances in each of the above mentioned cities. Cheremosh will end its tour with a performance on Kyiv’s historic Independence Square in front of thousands of people during the city of Kyiv’s annual celebration called the “Kyiv Day”.
Cheremosh is gaining wide attention in Ukraine. Cheremosh’s documentary “Faces of Cheremosh: A Forty Year Reflection” will be premiered across Ukraine and streamed worldwide on tvi.ua/stream, the first Canadian documentary of its kind to be broadcast in Ukraine. The “Faces of Cheremosh” documentary was written and produced by Edmonton filmmaker Gail Currie and has had aired many times in Canada on OMNI Television.
Another first, will be the homecoming of Cheremosh’s Artistic Director, Mykola Kanevets, a native of Kyiv, Ukraine. Kanevets, who joined Cheremosh as Artistic Director in 1991, will finally be able to showcase his Canadian work in Ukraine. Kanevets is confident that Ukrainian audiences will recognize the professional level of Ukrainian folk dance that has been upheld by Cheremosh over the past 44 years.
Cheremosh dancers will add their own social media perspective to the tour by blogging and video-blogging from Ukraine. Dance enthusiasts are invited to experience the journey by checking out their blog at cheremosh.ca/blog or by following them on Facebook at fb.com/cheremosh.
Cheremosh leaves Edmonton on May 16th and returns June 2nd.
