Vichnaya Pamyat: Lawrence Kenakin – A Celebration of Life


With great sadness, we announce the passing of Lawrence Kenakin on September 23, 2012 at the age of 67 years.
Lawrence was a dancer in Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Ensemble (now referred to as Company) from the group’s inception in 1969 to 1984. He served as President of Ukrainian Cheremosh Society from 1979 to 1980 and was awarded the distinction of Honourary Lifetime Member of our Society. Read more…

Cheremshyna and Chumak II Vancouver Tour 2012


Cheremshyna and Chumak II embarked on a short yet memorable dance tour to Vancouver at the beginning of the summer.On July 1st they participated in Vancouver’s Canada Day Parade, enjoying attention(adoration?!) from onlookers and other parade participants prior to the parade start, and then performing for over 100,000 cheering spectators along the parade route. Chester Kuc featured in ACUA Vitae


Entering the door of Chester Kuc’s residence may give one the sense that they’ve been transported back in time. Not only is every wall space and shelf covered with hundreds of traditional Ukrainian folk art items — much of it created by Kuc and his wife, Luba, themselves — there’s a not a photograph or modern artifact in sight, save for one thing: a prominently framed Edmonton Journal article hanging on the living room wall. Kanevets Profiled in ACUA Vitae


It’s a blazing hot day in Nessebar, Bulgaria – 37 degrees Celcius. Edmonton’s Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company is sweating on an outdoor stage, spinning and leaping in full costume and make-up.
Their discomfort pays off: as awards are handed out at the 2011 European Championship of Folklore, the only North American entry in the competition tops all European groups. Some 8,500 kilometers from home, the semi-professional troupe is named Absolute European Champion 2011 and awarded the grand prize medal. Read more…
